Arsenal have reportedly begun talks over a potential deal to sign Argentina international forward Mauro Icardi this summer, according to Sky Sports Italia (via Football Italia).

The Premier League side, who finished second in the English top-flight standings last term behind eventual champions Leicester City, have been linked with a big money move for the Inter Milan striker.

The 23-year-old, who has one international cap for Argentina after making his international debut against Uruguay back in October 2013, scored 16 goals and provided four assists in 34 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit last season.

Icardi, who was left out of Argentina’s squad for this summer’s Copa America, has emerged as an alternative transfer target to manager Arsene Wenger as the Gunners continue to pursue fellow Argentine Gonzalo Higuain from Italian rivals Napoli.

The report suggests that the Inter star could be available for a fee between £38m and £50m, although La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid are understood to still be favourites to win his signature.
