Spanish giants Atletico Madrid look set to rival Chelsea for Alexis Sanchez’s signature this summer, according to AS.
The Arsenal forward has yet to agree a new deal at the Emirates, and with his current one set to expire in the summer of 2018, speculation has been building about a potential departure from North London this summer.
The Chile international, who netted in his country’s 3-1 victory over Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, has scored 18 goals and laid on nine assists in 27 Premier League games this season, yet isn’t any closer to agreeing a new contract at Arsenal.
Antonio Conte’s Chelsea have reportedly listed Sanchez as their number one transfer target this summer, but recent reports suggest that Atletico Madrid are also in the running for the 28-year-old forward, who has scored 156 goals in 511 club appearances in his career.
Diego Simeone’s side are hopeful of having their impending transfer ban uplifted by FIFA, and that could pave the way for the 46-year-old to make a move for Sanchez, a player he reportedly holds in high esteem.
Sanchez’s excellent experiences of La Liga, where he scored 47 goals in 141 games for Barcelona and won the league title in 2013, could tempt him back to Spain, although he has recently said that he is happy in London, which could make a move to the Vicente Calderon Stadium problematic.
Nonetheless, Atletico are in the race, and if they were to reach a second successive Champions League final, and perhaps go on and win the competition, they would become an even more attractive destination for some of the best players in Europe.
