Ten games into this current season and it’s hard to know how QPR are getting on under Chris Ramsey. The team are currently lying in 11th place having won four, lost three and drawn three. With 18 goals scored and 20 goals conceded, the R’s also have the strange honour of being the league’s most potent attacking force and leakiest defence all at once.

At the start of the campaign, with many of the club’s key players expected to depart during the transfer window, the general feeling was that this would be a season of struggle. A lot of fans, myself included, would’ve happily taken 11th after 10 games. However, by keeping hold of Charlie Austin, Matt Phillips and the rest, have the goalposts (pardon the pun) been moved?

Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey have already called this a season of consolidation and what is clear is that the club is still in a huge period of change (again). It’s impossible to know what’s going on behind the scenes at QPR, but on the face of it, you’ve got to think with the squad Ramsey has at his disposal, we should be pushing for the play-offs minimum.

Ramsey has also come under fire quite quickly from some of the fans on social media, many of who are bemoaning his lack of experience and ability to build a team that can defend. But it should be said that he has turned a team that performed like a binary code when they were last in the Championship, to a team that scores for fun. If you haven’t seen Tjaronn Chery’s goal against Bolton, look it up.

That being said, many of Rangers’ performances on the pitch this season have been bizarre. The team seem to start with little semblance of a plan, conceding possession meekly and only really getting going when the second half begins. The team also lack bite and confidence – the 4-0 thrashing at Fulham for me felt like it was on the cards. Yet, despite all of this, the team has scored 18 goals and not all of them have come from Charlie Austin. Our overreliance on the England international last season was something that needed rectifying. Also, there have been some excellent away wins, especially the three unexpected points away at Wolves.

As a whole, QPR fans are a patient bunch and have supported the club through thick and thin. It has been quite a galling experience to see the club fail miserably at attempting to stay in the Premier League, especially with all the money that was floating around Loftus Road. Now, Chris Ramsey is dealing with a much tighter budget as the club attempt to balance the books. The consequence of the Tony Fernandes years (who has gone very quiet of late…) is that the club are now in a state of limbo, seen as a ‘big small club’ if you will.

It’s an unenviable task for Ramsey and certainly a baptism of fire for a still very new first team coach. It seems that the quality of our best first team players might see us through some tricky games this season, but whether Ramsey can manage all the expectations demanded of him is right now harder to tell.
