Liverpool continued their rejuvenation under Jurgen Klopp with a stunning 6-1 win at Southampton as they book their place in the last-four of the Capital One Cup.
Southampton, who were attempting to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1987, took the lead on 41 seconds when Sadio Mane headed in Ryan Bertrand’s cross.
But two goals in four first-half minutes from the returning Daniel Sturridge and another just before the break from Divock Origi turned the tie on its head.
Origi, who had failed to find the net in 10 previous appearances for the club, struck twice more to complete his hat-trick in the second half, whilst Jordon Ibe jumped off the bench to fire home the eight-time winner’s fifth of the night.
Premier League leaders Manchester City also secured their spot in the next round after defeating Championship side Hull City 4-1 at the Etihad.
Wilfried Bony opened the scoring on 12 minutes, before a Kelechi Iheanacho strike and Kevin de Bruyne brace in the last 10 minutes sealed victory.
Andrew Robertson grabbed an injury-time consolation for the Tigers, who were playing in the last-eight for the first time in their history.
At the Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough were defeated 2-0 by Everton, who advance to the semi-finals for just the second time since 1988.
Gerard Deulofeu was the star of the night as he opened the scoring with a brilliant solo effort, before producing a wonderful cross to find Romelu Lukaku for the Toffees’ second.
Elsewhere, Stoke also saw off Championship opposition as they defeated Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 to advance to the last-four for the first time since 1972.
Ibrahim Afellay scored his first goal for the club on 30 minutes, before Phil Bardsley also got on the Potters’ scoresheet for the first time with a 30 yard effort in the second half.
