The days of Werder Bremen being feared by European opposition have long gone. Bremen’s last campaign in European club competition came in 2010 when they exited the Champions League at the play-off stages.

Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin were in glistening form prior to kick-off. The hosts were in third place in the Bundesliga going into the game, only three points behind second placed Bayern Munich; who have won the last four league titles.

Max Kruse’s goal was enough for Bremen to capture the three points. The result was very much needed for the visitors as they went into the game only four points clear of the relegation zone in 14th place.

It was Berlin’s first league defeat since October, leaving them six points adrift of the top two in the Bundesliga table. It was also Berlin’s first loss at home all season.

A few years ago this result would have not been considered a shock. However, given the current climate, Bremen certainly shook up their in-form opposition.
