Liverpool are reportedly ready to try and hijack Arsenal’s potential £20m deal for England international striker Jamie Vardy this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Premier League side, who reached the 2016 UEFA Europa League final, but could only finish eighth in the English top-flight standings this term, are ready to battle the Gunners for Leicester City’s star striker.

The 29-year-old, who has eight international caps for the Three Lions and is included in England’s 23-man squad for EURO 2016 later this month, scored a sensational 24 goals and provided eight assists in 38 appearances in all competitions for the Foxes last season.

Vardy, who has a £20m release clause in his current Leicester contract, is wanted by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to help fire his side to their first league title since 2004.

However the report suggests that Jurgen Klopp’s Reds cannot trigger the Three Lions’ star’s release clause as they have not qualified for the Champions League later this year, although they are hoping their offer of £140,000-a-week wages will help their cause instead.
