Klopp’s men picked up an important 1-1 draw away at Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, and went into the second leg at Anfield as favourites to progress.

However, it all went wrong for Klopp against his former club, as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put the visitors two-up after just nine minutes and, although Divock Origi got one back just after half time, Marco Reus made it 3-1 to Dortmund on the night after 57 minutes.

It meant that Liverpool needed three unanswered goals in the final half an hour to progress, and what was to follow was nothing short of extraordinary.

Philippe Coutinho’s excellent strike gave the Reds some hope with 24 minutes to go, and Mamadou Sakho got Anfield bouncing when his 78th minute header nestled into the corner of the Dortmund net.

With Anfield roaring, Liverpool pressed for that one goal which would send them through, and it came courtesy of another unlikely source, as defender Dejan Lovren headed home James Milner’s deep cross to cap off another great European night on Merseyside.
