Manchester United are prepared to cough up £31m this summer in a bid to beat rivals Arsenal to the signing of Spanish youth international Saul Niguez, according to Don Balon (via The Sun).

The 13-time Premier League champions, who defeated arch-rivals Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, are eager to fend off the Gunners at the end of the current 2015-16 campaign as they look to recruit the highly-rated Atletico Madrid midfielder.

The 21-year-old, who has 14 international caps for Spain’s Under-21 international, has scored eight goals and provided two assists in 36 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga outfit so far this season.

Niguez, who turned down a contract extension with Diego Simeone’s side only last month, reportedly has a release clause of £34m in his current deal that runs until 2020.

However the report suggests that Atletico are ready to cut their losses this summer as the central midfielder refuses to commit his future at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.
