Man United’s summer transfer business had seemed done and dusted when they finally landed the record breaking deal to bring back Paul Pogba, however another target has emerged.

Southampton defender, Jose Fonte is now reportedly the top target for Red Devil’s boss Jose Mourinho as he looks to sure up his back line.

However, according to reports from The Sun, in order to land a deal for his fellow compatriot, the former Chelsea manager has been told by the club’s hierarchy that he must first axe some of the clubs top earning deadwood, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Marcos Rojo top of that list.

Should the powers that be at Old Trafford secure moves away for such players then the Portuguese boss will still have a fight on his hands from The Saints to land the Euro 2016 winner.

The 32-year-old joined the South Coast side in 2010, taking a step down from, the then Championship side, Crystal Palace to join the Saints in League One.

Since making the move to St Mary’s the former Sporting Lisbon man has made 368 appearances for the side he now captains, winning back-to-back promotions to bring the club back to the Premier League, and helping the one time FA Cup winners into the group stages of the Europa League for the first time in their history.
