Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Hull City midfielder Mohamed Diame after triggering his £4.5 million release clause, according to Sky Sports.

The 29-year-old joined the Tigers from West Ham in 2014, and has gone on to make 50 appearances, scoring 13 goals, including a brilliant winning strike in the Championship play-off final earlier this year as his club beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Wembley to seal an instant return to the Premier League.

However, now the Senegal international is on the verge of a move back to England’s second tier with Rafa Benitez’s Magpies, and he could be set to replace Moussa Sissoko, with the Frenchman being heavily linked with a transfer to Real Madrid following some impressive performances for his country at Euro 2016.

Newcastle have already signed the likes of Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle, Grant Hanley and Isaac Hayden as they aim for promotion, while managerless Hull’s problems continue with the new top-flight campaign just 12 days away.
