You would have thought that Jan Vertonghen’s injury would have given Austrian international Kevin Wimmer more first team opportunities, but it hasn’t quite worked out like that for the 24-year-old.

Vertonghen suffered an ankle problem in their 4-0 victory over West Brom last month, but since that game, Wimmer has only appeared twice for Spurs in their succeeding six matches.

He was once again left on the bench for the trip to Gent on Thursday, with Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier preferred, yet starts against both Aston Villa and Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup this term suggests that he’ll get an opportunity at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
