Round-up: Europa League – Liverpool and Tottenham win but Celtic are on the brink

Tottenham survived a scare from Belgian side Anderlecht as they ran out 2-1 winners at White Heart Lane, thanks to a superb late strike from Mousa Dembele.

Clearly heartened by taking three points off Spurs at home, the Belgians should have probably been ahead inside four minutes, but Jan Vertonghen recovered well to make a crucial tackle on striker Stefano Okaka inside the six-yard box, before Steven Defour also went close.

Spurs were ahead after 28 minutes, when Harry Kane managed to slip his man and fire low into the left corner from 20 yards, his fifth goal in three games.

Besnik Hasi’s side started brightly in the second half, and the away side were level on 71 minutes, when substitute Imoh Ezekiel latched on to Defour’s cross and was able to beat Lloris, aided by a deflection in off the left upright.

Spurs pressed for a winner and were rewarded with one of the finest goals of the Europa League campaign thus far, a 20-yard half volley from Dembele that flew into the top left corner. The result means they go top of Group J on seven points.

Klopp is still unbeaten as Liverpool manager.

Jurgen Klopp secured his first European victory as Liverpool manager as his side beat Russian outfit Rubin Kazan 1-0 away from home.

They started on the front foot, and James Milner rattled the bar after only six minutes from the right of the six yard box. Valeriy Chaly’s side had goalkeeper Sergei Ryzhikov to thank after he also turned away a goal-bound deflection off defender Solomon Kvirkvelia.

Liverpool took the lead seven minutes after the interval, with Jordon Ibe scoring his fist senior goal for the Reds with a low finish to the left corner from just outside the penalty area.

Klopp’s side managed to withstand a late rally from the hosts to claim the three points, which moves them to second in Group B on six points.

Celtic face an uphill task if they are to qualify.

Celtic have it all to do to qualify from Group A after they went down 2-1 at home to Norwegian side Molde.

Mohammed Elyounoussi scored his third goal of the Europa League campaign after 21 minutes, but the Bhoys hit back five minutes later, when Kris Commons also netted his third of the competition after arrowing a left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

However, Ronny Deila’s side were behind again before half-time, when midfielder Daniel Hestad reacted well to beat Craig Gordon following a corner on 37 minutes.

Things got worse for the home team late in the second half when Nir Bitton was dismissed 14 minutes from time after bringing down Ola Kamara when he appeared to be through on goal.

The result leaves Celtic bottom of Group A on two points, while their Norwegian opponents move to the summit with 10.

Elsewhere, Monaco missed the chance to maintain their lead over Spurs in Group J as they were held to a 1-1 draw in Azerbaijan by Qarabag.

It could have been worse for the French side, as they trailed for the best part of 35 minutes after striker Samuel Armenteros opened the scoring on 39 minutes. Portuguese winger Ivan Cavaleiro equalised on 72 minutes, meaning Leonardo Jardim’s side move on to six points after four fixtures.

FC Sion maintained their lead at the top of Liverpool’s group with a 1-1 draw at home against Bordeaux. Winger Thomas Toure gave the French side the lead on 67 minutes, only for the home side to equalise four minutes into stoppage time through Vero Salatic.

Ajax and Fenerbahce played out a 0-0 draw in Holland, meaning that the Turkish side remain in prime position to qualify behind Molde in Group A.

Napoli kept up their perfect record in the competition as they thrashed Danish side Midtjylland 5-0, while Albanian side Skenderbeu pulled off the shock of the night, beating 10-man Sporting Lisbon 3-0 in Group H.

Elsewhere, Raul Bobadilla scored a hat-trick as Augsburg ran out 4-1 winners against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, meaning they move to second in Group L on six points, behind Athletic Bilbao.
