Spurs have struggled in Europe over recent seasons, culminating in a measly effort in the Champions League earlier on this term, so experienced pros at the highest level might be what Pochettino needs to take his team to the next level.

Thus, they could do a lot worse than make a move for Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic in January.

The Croatian international has played at some of the biggest clubs in Europe, notably at Bayern Munich, where he netted 22 times in 40 games in their all-conquering 2012/13 campaign, in which they won the Bundesliga, German Cup, and Champions League.

Overall, Mandzukic scored 48 goals in 88 games for the German giants, and then netted 20 in 43 matches in his one and only season with Atletico Madrid before moving to Juventus in 2015.

However, the returning Paulo Dybala looks set to move the 30-year-old onto the fringes of the Juve first team, with Mandzukic playing just 17 minutes as Dybala and record-signing Gonzalo Higuain led the line and both netted in a 3-0 victory over Bologna on Sunday.

Thus, Spurs should look at that as an opportunity to prize Mandzukic away from Turin.

They have been linked with the Croat in recent months, and it’s a move that would be perfect for the North London club.
