Many will say that Gary Cahill has had a couple of bad games and that it’s harsh to be overly critical of him, but he’s not been at his best for a while now.

He was very fortunate to retain his place ahead of Chris Smalling at the heart of the England defence in the recent qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia, and didn’t do enough in those games to suggest that he’s back in form.

He looked shaky every time Slovenia broke, and didn’t deal with the aerial threat well enough – his recent form may be a sign of things to come.
