A lot happened at Anfield on the final day of the 2011 January transfer window, with Fernando Torres leaving the club to move to Chelsea for £50 million, and Andy Carroll arriving from Newcastle for £35 million not long afterwards.

However, the best bit of business they did that day was signing Luis Suarez from Ajax for just £23 million, as he went on to lead the Liverpool line brilliantly over the course of the following few years.

The Uruguayan international netted 17 times in his first full season in England, but after that he took it up another level, scoring 30 times in just 44 games in 2012/13, and then 31 in just 37 matches the following season.

Unsurprisingly, Suarez’s sensational form attracted interest from top European clubs, with Barcelona securing his services in 2014 for £65 million – this all after the controversy Suarez created at the 2014 World Cup, which saw him banned from playing for four months after biting Giorgio Chiellini.

Nonetheless, a return of 82 goals in 133 games is incredible, and he’ll certainly go down as one of Liverpool’s best signings.
