The same can also be said of forward Lionel Messi, who has also been linked with United.

The Daily Star reported a few weeks ago that Mourinho and co are using their sponsor Adidas, who also sponsor Messi, as a way of bringing him to Old Trafford by persuading him not to renew at the Nou Camp.

The Argentine’s current deal runs out in 2018, but Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who worked with Messi at the Nou Camp between 2008 and 2012, doesn’t believe Messi will ever leave the club.

And you sense that if he was to go anywhere in England, it would be to Guardiola at City.

Messi made his Barcelona debut back in October 2004, and has since then scored 472 goals for the club in just 548 games.

Would he really leave that to join a club struggling to get into the Champions League? Unlikely.
