6. Grimsby 2-1 Liverpool (aet) – 3rd Round, 2001
It’s Grimsby again eliminating Premier League opposition – turns out they’re quite good at pulling off upsets in the League Cup. This time it’s Liverpool who they beat, although it wasn’t easy! After a goalless 90 minutes, it was the Reds who took the lead in the 101st minute through a Gary McAllister penalty. But Grimsby didn’t give up and on 113 minutes, Broomes equalised for the away side and just when it looked like the tie would be settled on penalties, boyhood Liverpool fan Phil Jevons bagged a winner in the dying seconds of the game.
