In exactly the same position as Arsenal four seasons earlier (one point from three games), Liverpool needed a minor miracle from their last three games to qualify, as they sat four points behind second-placed Porto, and six points off Marseille in top spot.

Gameday four saw a record-breaking 8-0 victory for the Reds over Turkish side Besiktas at Anfield, and they followed that up with another home win, this time against Porto, as they triumphed 4-1.

As the final round of games approached, Rafa Benitez’s men had to complete a task that no other English club had ever managed, to beat Marseille at the Stade Velodrome.

The five-time champions of Europe managed exactly that though. Goals from Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel sealed a memorable 4-0 win in the South of France and ensured qualification to the knockout stages.
