“I don’t know what I’m doing here”. Roy Hodgson’s opening line in his press conference following his resignation on Monday evening just about sums up the majority of his time at England, let alone his feelings after the Three Lions suffered a humiliating defeat to Iceland.

Although he came through EURO 2016 qualifying with a 100% record, many dubbed his last match as the worst England performance ever.

Combining this with the disappointing 2014 World Cup, strange starting selections and some dodgy decision-making, his time with the national side had to come to an abrupt end.

Now, the FA will be tasked with finding the right man to restore England’s pride as they look to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The issue that they have however is that the underlying problems with the England side go much deeper than just the manager, and whoever is brought in will have a real challenge on their hands.

The current favourite to take over the reigns was Gareth Southgate, with some bookmakers previously displaying odds as short as 2-1, but the current England Under-21 boss has made it clear he is not interested in succeeding Hodgson in the hot seat.

Other English managers who have been linked to the role include the likes of Alan Shearer, Gary Neville and Glenn Hoddle.

With this appointment however, the FA could look to appoint internationally again, which is something that they have tested only twice with Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

One man that may tick all the boxes is ex-PSG boss Laurent Blanc – he is a man who has a wealth of international experience and who is currently out of work.

Another man who will undoubtedly be considered is Leicester City’s Claudio Ranieri.

Who could ignore him after the wonders he has worked in the Premier League this season? The FA would need to move fast though as he is expected to sign a new contract with the 2016 top-flight champions in the coming weeks.

With these names in mind, here are five managers who could replace Hodgson…

Slaven Bilic

Whilst it is extremely unlikely that Bilic could be tempted away from West Ham United, the Croatian would definitely be a popular choice amongst England supporters.

The Hammers boss wowed fans with his punditry work on ITV this summer and, despite his relatively young age, he has a wealth of international managerial experience.

The 47-year-old worked wonders during his time with the Croatian national side and maintained a 65% win rate during his six-year spell.

Bilic’s work with his home nation was extremely impressive and he has been credited with the revival of the Croatian team.
