Not for the first time, as we will see later, Sir Alex Ferguson proved he was one of the kings of mind games, provoking Liverpool boss Benitez into an astonishing personal attack.

In a 5-minute scripted speech, the Spaniard labelled his Scottish rival a “hypocrite” and said he received preferential treatment from the football authorities.

The Reds were top of the Premier League standings at the time and Benitez added that Ferguson felt threatened by their position. United went on to win the title from Liverpool by four points.
