In May 2008, FSV Mainz 05 boss Jurgen Klopp was approached to succeed Thomas Doll as manager of Borussia Dortmund. Just two months later, Klopp masterminded BVB’s defence of the German Super Cup by defeating Bayern Munich 2-1 in his very first competitive match in charge. Although the competition was not recognised by the German Football League that year, Klopp’s taste of instant success was a sign of things to come at the Westfalenstadion under the charismatic manager, as goals from Jakub Blaszczykowski and Tomas Hajnal cancelled out Mehmet Ekeci’s strike for Munich, much to the delight of 50,000 die-hard Dortmund supporters. This was Klopp’s first-ever managerial honour.
