Townsend opened his account for Palace in an impressive 4-1 win over Stoke City with a lovely right footed strike to put his side 4-0 up.

The goal was the exact opposite of what the 11-capped England winger has created a reputation from, that being cutting in from the right wing on his left foot, as he did instead cut in from the left onto his right before firing past Shay Given.

The Eagles’ £13m summer signing from Newcastle United had already provided the free-kick which saw fellow new-boy James Tomkins open the scoring, before goals from Scott Dann and James McArthur had put the hosts in cruise control.

Fresh from his six-month spell in the north east, the 25-year-old winger has looked rejuvenated and has continued this good form in the capital as he looks to force his way back into the England side under new boss Sam Allardyce.
