Southampton are one of three clubs, along with Burnley and Watford, who find themselves mid-table on 30 points.

After improving their league position from eighth, to seventh, and then to sixth over the course of the last three seasons, Claude Puel’s men have had a fairly average season, but have managed to reach the final of the EFL Cup.

Whilst this could detract from the likelihood of being able to secure a top six finish, something that will add to their chances of a strong end to the campaign is the addition of £14m signing Manolo Gabbiadini.

In his first two games for The Saints, the former Napoli striker has scored three goals and will provide a great boost to Southampton’s misfiring frontline.

It is somewhat remarkable that the Italian international has already scored over 10 per cent of the team’s goals in the top-flight this season, despite spending just 163 minutes on the pitch.

The striker could prove to be a great acquisition as Southampton try to match their last three impressive seasons.
