Whilst the USSR qualifying for the 1992 tournament itself wasn’t too surprising, the break up of the Soviet Union posed a problem for their participation in finals.

The solution was the formation of the CIS national team, an association representing 12 states that previously played under the USSR banner, with a squad featuring players from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus amongst others.

In their short existence they finished last in their group at the finals in Sweden, and the association was soon disbanded.
