After Manchester United’s disappointing and brutal 3-1 exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Leicester City on Sunday, fans will already have one eye on who could be available to take them to the next level.

Although they’ve been on some stellar defensive runs, it’s the men at the back that have been called into question for the Red Devils most frequently, with a permanent partner for £85m Harry Maguire thought to be top of the shopping list.

Now it seems that United may have received a boost in that chase by way of La Liga, according to Manchester Evening News.

The report details that Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres is interested in a move to Old Trafford, with the 24-year-old having a believed £55m release clause in his contract.

His current deal runs until 2024, but the Spaniard is open to a move to English football with Manchester City also interested, along with further competition from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

It also states that Villarreal could consider a player-plus-cash exchange if any buyer is unable to match such a figure in the current financial climate, potentially opening the door as United look to get rid of up to four players.

Torres wasn’t called up to the Spain side for the current international break but only missed out through injury, with the left-footer a perfect partner for the aforementioned Maguire.

The report also details that any possible deal for the 6ft 2in Torres would likely take place late in the transfer window this summer, with his focus fully on the upcoming European Championship tournament.

Torres has featured 32 times for Villarreal this season, keeping nine clean sheets and scoring three goals, as the Yellow Submarine currently sit seventh in the Spanish top-flight.
