Up until Thursday evening, United had not won any of their last nine European away games, and that’s not form that’s going to win you the competition.

David Moyes’ United beat Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 in November 2013, but since then the Red Devils have had a miserable time of it on the road, and it showed again in this campaign.

They laboured to a 1-0 loss in Feyenoord in their opening game of the competition, but home wins over Zorya and Fenerbahce looked to have steadied the ship, only to go and lose 2-1 to the latter at the start of November.

That 2-0 victory in Zorya on Thursday not only sees them through, but gets the monkey off their back, and they’ll be confident of taking any side on in the last 32, both home and away.
