Manchester United have been handed a huge boost in their reported bid to re-sign Sweden legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic, according to the Guardian.

The Premier League side, who were defeated 2-1 by Real Madrid earlier this week in the UEFA Super Cup, have been linked with offering the veteran striker a new deal once he recovers from a cruciate ligament injury.

The 35-year-old, who earned 116 caps for Sweden before retiring from international duty following UEFA Euro 2016, scored 28 goals and provided 10 assists in 46 appearances in all competitions during his debut season with The Red Devils.

Ibrahimovic, who lifted the FA Community Shield, EFL and the UEFA Europa League with Jose Mourinho’s side last term, is understood to have told the United manager he wants to return to Old Trafford, despite former club AC Milan also willing to welcome him back to the San Siro.

The report suggests a short-term contract is likely to be offered to the Swedish star, who is still currently continuing his rehabilitation programme.

United have signed defender Victor Lindelof (Benfica), striker Romelu Lukaku (Everton) and midfielder Nemanja Matic (Chelsea) this summer transfer window.
