Chelsea were one of a few top European clubs reportedly keeping an eye on Sevilla midfielder Steven N’Zonzi during the transfer window.

The Frenchman moved to the Spanish club in 2015 after a great three-year spell at Stoke, and has since gone on to develop into a top-quality midfielder who helps make Sevilla tick.

The 28-year-old was part of the side that won the Europa League last season, and he has been one of their highest-rated performers over the course of his 18-month spell in La Liga.

His excellent displays attracted interest from around Europe, with Chelsea a side looking at N’Zonzi in a bid to strengthen their midfield area.

However, with Cesc Fabregas remaining at the club beyond the deadline, Conte clearly felt that he didn’t need another central midfielder, and his hopes were dashed anyway when N’Zonzi agreed a new contract at Sevilla a few days ago.
