Barcelona are interested in signing Manchester United’s Juan Mata on a free transfer this summer, according to The Sun.

Mata has made it clear he wants a two-year contract extension to stay at Old Trafford, but the Red Devils have only offered him a further 12 months.

Barca have opened talks with the Spain international’s agent and father, and are prepared to offer the creative player a return to Spain with a two-year deal.

The Catalan club see the midfielder as a possible rotation player who they could sell for a profit following his first year at Camp Nou.

Newly-confirmed boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær will be expecting plenty of transfer activity at Old Trafford this summer.

Mata joined the Red Devils from Chelsea in 2014 for £37.1million and he has gone on to make 215 appearances in all competitions for the Manchester club.

However, he has not been a regular in the starting line up under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, and a return to his homeland would be a tempting prospect for the 30-year-old.

The playmaker has earned 41 caps and scored 10 goals for his national team, after making his debut a decade years ago under Vincent Del Bosque.

He was a part of the World Cup winning Spain squad in 2010, but has not made an appearance for his country since 2016.
