If recent reports are anything to go by, Arsenal could sign one of the most highly-rated defenders in world football in January.

21-year-old Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez is reportedly on Arsene Wenger’s radar as he looks to shore up his Arsenal defence, and indeed provide healthy competition to first choice centre-backs Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi.

As much as German international Mustafi has done well since arriving in England during the summer, there have been a few shaky performances in recent weeks, so Wenger could look to add more defensive solidarity to his backline.

And where better to find that sort of player than at Atletico Madrid who, under Diego Simeone, are as good a defensive side as any.

With Manchester United also circling, Wenger may have to act fast in January to get his man, and it’d be a move worth pursuing if the Gunners want to win the title come May.
