If Manchester City had one area of weakness, it would be at the back and, with Vincent Kompany’s persistent injuries, Guardiola may want more defensive cover.

John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi are solid centre-backs, but if one of them gets injured or suspended, then City could be struggling.

However, the Manchester club have been linked with a move for Leonardo Bonucci in January, with the Italian one of the most highly-rated defenders in Serie A.

The 29-year-old has been part of the Juventus side that have won the domestic treble in the last two seasons, and his defensive capabilities have interested former boss Antonio Conte at Chelsea.

However, the Blues’ improved defensive displays could see Conte’s interest waver, which could open the door for Guardiola to make a move which would certainly strengthen City’s title bid.
