Little did Manchester United fans know that, in January 2006, Sir Alex Ferguson had bought a defender who would go on to become one of the best the Premier League has ever seen.

Serbian centre-back Nemanja Vidic made the move from Spartak Moscow to Old Trafford on January 5 2006 for £7 million, just a few days before United clinched a deal for Evra.

And what a bargain it was as the combative centre-half went on to win five Premier League titles, three League Cups, and a Champions League crown in his time in Manchester, totalling 300 appearances for the club before leaving in 2014.

Vidic developed a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand during his spell in the North West, and he’ll go down as one of the best centre-backs that has ever played in the Premier League.

Two times a Premier League Player of the Season and four times in the PFA Team of the Year tells you all you need to know about how highly Vidic was rated by the fans, his fellow pros, and opposing managers.

He retired from the game last year after seeing his contract with Inter Milan end in January.
