January 2006 saw English forward Dean Ashton join from Norwich City. Ashton’s arrival cost them a then club-record fee of £7,250,000.

The striker scored 19 goals in his 56 appearances at Upton Park. He also scored in the 2006 FA Cup final and made his first and only England cap whilst with the Hammers.

Ashton’s career was unfortunately cut short as he was forced to retire in December 2009, aged just 26.

The forward returned to the Boleyn Ground in March 2016 and scored a spectacular overhead kick in Mark Noble’s testimonial match.
