Leicester City are title contenders. However unusual this may sound, it is time to stop pretending that they aren’t and give them the credit that they have earned.
All three of Louis van Gaal, Roberto Martinez and Jose Mourinho have complimented their start to the season, and have admitted that they now view the Premier League leaders as real competitors.
Currently two points clear at the top of the standings, the team from the King Power Stadium have shown more grit, determination, consistency and persistence than any other, bigger, more fancied teams. They may not win the league come the end of the season, but they have proved they have what it takes to put up a good challenge for the title.
Here are five of the reasons why the Foxes should now be regarded as serious title contenders…
The announcement of Claudio Ranieri as manger at Leicester came as a shock to the footballing world. His appointment was met mainly with negativity but it didn’t take long for him to turn opinions round.
The Italian has a remarkable record with a CV that speaks for itself, managing teams such as Chelsea, Juventus, Inter Milan, Roma, Valencia – the impressive list goes on.
Ranieri inherited a good side but what he has done since then really is astounding. His cool, calm and collective approach to the game is refreshing, his substitutions are tactically astute and he has an attitude and style that draws the best out of every individual player.
Even though Ranieri’s side remain top of the league, he still insists that his first target is to reach 40 points. The 64-year-old has, for now, taken City to the next level.
