Injury has thwarted Phil Jones’ opportunities under Jose Mourinho this season but, with United struggling defensively at present, the England international may get a run in the first team now he is nearing full fitness.

However, when all of United’s defensive options are fit, the 24-year-old probably isn’t first choice in any of the positions.

At one stage, he looked like he could go on and become a great player, in either defence or midfield, but this constant deputising when injuries and suspensions hit the team means that we still don’t know what Jones’ best position is, and it seems that no one is really sure.

Thus, a move away to a club where English players are given a chance could be beneficial, and Pochettino could look to bring him to Spurs in January.

Spurs’ first team consists of a few English players who may have struggled at times in the past, but are now crucial members of the squad. The same could happen to Jones.

why would we buy Schneiderlin when we already have Dembele, Wanyama, Dier and Sissoko who play in the same positions? Same goes for Phil Jones. Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Wimmer are all better than Jones and Dier is versatile enough to play there as well. We need a reliable striker to supplement Kane, not more players in positions where we are already strong
