As much as they got further than many expected, there will still be some disappointment among Leicester fans that they have gone out of the competition.

It was always going to be difficult against Atletico Madrid, who have reached two of the last three Champions League finals, but to only lose 1-0 in the Spanish capital gave them real hope ahead of Tuesday’s return leg.

But the issue was that, without an away goal, any Atletico goal would put a serious dent in their chances, and when Saul Niguez netted in the first half, it was always going to be an uphill struggle.

Shakespeare’s men fought brilliantly and had the visitors rattled for a time, but ultimately left themselves too much to do, and thus exited the competition.
