Chelsea are trying to sign experienced Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic, according to The Sun.

The Croatia international has been a key player for the Catalan club since his move from Sevilla in 2014.

However, following the confirmation that the La Liga champions will bring in Ajax starlet Frenkie de Jong in the summer, it’s reported that Rakitic is considering his future at the Camp Nou.

Despite boss Ernesto Valverde being keen to extend the 30-year-old’s contract beyond 2021, it’s claimed Barca have placed a £44million price-tag on the player in case he decides to move on.

Chelsea are reportedly keen to offer the midfielder Premier League football but German champions Bayern Munich are also monitoring the star’s situation.

Before going toe-to-toe for the playmaker with the Bundesliga giants, the Blues will have to first appeal a transfer ban imposed on them by FIFA.

Chelsea have been slapped with a FIFA transfer ban.

As it stands, the West London side will be unable to sign players in the next two transfer windows for breaching rules in relation to youth players.

Chelsea have confirmed they will appeal the decision as they attempt to bring Rakitic, who has won 12 trophies in his time with Barcelona, to Stamford Bridge.
