Chelsea are preparing to give right-back Reece James a new long-term contract at the club, according to reports.

The 19-year-old excelled during his loan spell at Wigan Athletic, winning the club’s Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Goal of the Season awards in a campaign where he was also named in the PFA Team of the Year.

Now the Independent are reporting that the Blues are planning to tie their starlet down as they look set to face a two-window transfer ban imposed on them by FIFA for breaching rules in relation to youth players.

James was one of the standout players in the 2018/19 Championship season.

It’s claimed that fellow right-back Davide Zappacosta looks ready to depart Stamford Bridge, leaving James as the natural deputy to Cesar Azpilicueta for the 2019/20 campaign.

The England Under-20 international still has three years left on his current Chelsea deal but the West London club want to give their defender improved terms following reported interest from Manchester United and teams in the Bundesliga.

James, whose sister Lauren plays for Manchester United Women, captained the Blues’ youth team to successive U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup titles.
