Newcastle United and Southampton have both failed in bids for Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to reports.

L’Equipe (via Sport Witness) claim that both Premier League clubs have seen their offers rejected by the Bundesliga side.

Both teams are interested in strengthening their attacks this summer and have both highlighted the Frenchman as a target.

Having scored 14 goals in 36 games for his side this season, the 21-year-old is now a man in demand across Europe.

Rafa Benitez is on the lookout for new additions.

It’s claimed that the bids made by both clubs were in the region of £15-£20million,
but Mainz are looking for closer to double that to be willing to depart with their forward.

The Magpies current striker Salomon Rondon’s immediate future is up in the air having returned to West Bromwich Albion following the end of his loan deal, leading manager Rafael Benitez to consider other options.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is also looking for a new attacking option as he looks to
build his own side at St Mary’s after his appointment in December.
